USES

 

Still widely used in South Africa as a household medicine: as a tea, a brandy tincture or as a vinegar. About 80% of Buchu essential oils are used in the food flavour industry to enhance fruit flavours.

The oil is also used in the perfume industry and in aromatherapy where it is considered to have an uplifting and stimulating effect.

Medicinal Uses for Buchu Oil

  • Urinary tract infections and prostitis
  • Healing wounds

Contra indications

  • Pulegone is a hepatotoxin and can be over stimulating to the kidneys. It is therefore not advised for people with kidney disorders and pregnant women.
  • Diuretics deplete body stores of potassium. Increase intake of foods high in potassium such as bananas and fresh vegetables.
